About REX motorcycles

Rex were an innovative marque from the time of its inception in 1899 as a motor manufacturer. They demonstrated their first motorcycle in 1900 while continuing to make automobiles and tri-cars.
Rex was one of the foremost manufacturers of motorcycles in Britain. Their advertising slogan read “ The King of British motors”, and the firm was a true market leader in design and development.
They were early adopters of good marketing. Rex had exploited the valuable publicity from events such as the Land’s End to John O’Groats journey between the most southerly and northerly parts of mainland Britain, establishing a new record for this 880-mile marathon in 1904
The Coventry-based firm was soon active in all types of motorcycle competition, including the inaugural 1907 Isle of Man TT where Billy Heaton’s sprung-fork Rex finished second in the twin-cylinder class.
Design elements:
1902 was a pivotal year in engine placement. The engine was positioned vertically in the frame. In the course of 1903 the 75×75 engine capacity dimensions were increased by 3 mm, which led to a capacity of 373 cc. New for 1904 were an increased fuel tank capacity, a slightly lowered frame plus a matching styled metal battery and coil box fitted in between saddle tube and rear guard. 1904 saw a green coach line for the new model. At the 1904 Chrystal palace Show no less than 50 Rex machines were on display. Typical Rex features are the rectangular silencer chamber on the cylinder that dispenses with an external pipe and silencer, the patented cradle around the engine and the almost “L” shaped tank. This particular machine is typical of a new model for 1904.

About this 1904 Rex veteran motorcycle

The current owner bought this motorcycle in Summer 2024. He intended to use it on UK Pioneer Runs. However, his plans have changed and this lovely 1904 Rex veteran motorcycle is now available for the next custodian.

Its accompanying old-style logbook shows that this early Rex was owned twice (in 1957 and 1971) by the renowned pre-war motorcycle racer Oliver Langton. He is most often associated with Scott motorcycles. Oliver Langton had several Rex machines, and this was his favourite. Before BS8258, the previous registration was ‘9 U’, This number was retained by the Langton family after Oliver’s death.

In between the “Langton” ownership periods, Adrian Reed purchased the Rex from Brian Verrall in 1997. Shortly after purchase, the engine was changed to the current unit, number ‘1323’.

This Pioneer bike is an older restoration that has completed many Pioneer Runs.
