1920s BSA 3 Speed 3.5HP hand change gearbox for flat tank motorcycles.
Possibly Model L, LP, HP, L29, L30, L31. as they are the 3.49H.P. and 3.5H.P. models that I can see have 3-speed and the two mounts on one side. My BSA friends tell me that the Sloper boxes has different mounts and I think the 3-Speed BSA gearboxes were changed to 4-speed around 1932.
I suppose, if you’re staring at this page in shock and disbelief that a decent example is actually available, then you’ll be delighted!
Please take a good look at the images. It’s knocking on 100 years old, so it’s not going to be perfect. However, it seems to be fairly free from the blight known as ali corrosion and is all held together in the right way. No weld repairs from what I can see and the clutch adjustment is still intact.
I haven’t taken the front cover off. Mostly because I didn’t have more than two Weetabix this morning and the screws were determined to stay just as they have been for many years. So, I cheated. I opened the brass inspection cover. The gearbox turns over very nicely by hand. (I made a little video if you really want to see it). The sprocket has had an argument with something harder than it is. It lost. Some of the teeth have clearly seen better days.
So, there you have it. My best guess is that this 3 1/2 HP 3-speed BSA motorcycle gearbox dates from some point in the mid 1920’s to early 1930’s.
There is a number stamp: 944. Ad “SM” stamped close to the number.
It’s for sale as you see it. Untested but I’m reasonably confident that it all turns fine.
