1920s L-Series BSA 3 Speed hand change gearbox for flat tank motorcycles.

I believe this early BSA transmission is for the Models: L, LP, HP, L29, L30, L31. However, you will need to make sure it’s the gearbox that you need. The original cover plate shows three patent numbers. My other gearbox only showed two patent numbers on the inspection cover, so I think it was a bit earlier.

This gearbox is also stamped with a number. The number is shown in the images.

This BSA 3 Speed hand change gearbox turns OK. I have a short video of it turning. It’s a little stiff. I imagine that’s because it needs cleaning out and some fresh lubricant adding. The teeth all look fine inside.

The gearbox still has the original BSA oil filler brass cap. It’s stamped with the BSA emblem.

I have had a similar gearbox before. It was stamped “3.5 H.P. The 3.49H.P. and 3.5H.P. models that I can see have 3-speed and the two mounts on one side and the L-Series and the HP.

I suppose, if you’re staring at this page in shock and disbelief that a decent example is actually available for your BSA, then you’ll be delighted!

Condition of the BSA 3 Speed hand change gearbox

  • It turns by hand. It’s stiff to turn as it the old lubricant has congealed and needs to be replaced.
  • It all seems to be there. It’s used and untested.
  • I can’t see any obvious damaged to the covers and case.
  • There are no obvious weld repairs either.
  • The drive shaft keyway and threads are fine.
  • The drive sprocket is getting a little old. The teeth have a bit of “whip” on them.
