1920’s vintage 2-stroke 285cc Neracar Sheffield Simplex engine with ML magneto & Binks Eccles carburettor.
Engine comes with:
- Original brass Sheffield-Simplex tag
- Clear engine numbers
- Original Binks Eccles (1920) Ltd carburettor and lever.
- Original ML anticlockwise Model N magneto.
- Piston etc as it turns over freely and has compression.
Add up the value of the carb and magneto alone. You aren’t paying much for the engine!
This is an engine kit for the British-built Type B Ner-A-Car motorcycle that was licenced to Sheffield Simplex (Kingston-upon-Thames, London, UK) by Carl Neracher. He was an American designer who used another 1911 design to create a “feet-forward” motorcycle design with hub-centre steering.

1920’s vintage 2-stroke 285cc Neracar Sheffield Simplex engine fitted
His version (The American Type A) began production in 1921 with a 221cc two-stroke engine. The 2-stroke 285cc Neracar Sheffield Simplex engine was utilised in the Type B. That is the engine on offer here. It has a bore and stroke of 70mm x 74mm. There was a further engine development by Sheffield Simplex when they introduced a 4-stroke Blackburne engine with 348cc. It was introduced in 1925. So, they Type B engine here, ran from about 1923 to 1925. Ner-A-Car production ceased in the Autumn of 1926.
About this particular Neracar Sheffield Simplex engine.
I have not taken it apart, or checked for a spark. So, you are buying this engine on the basis that it will need a thorough checking-over at the least.
However, I can saw that it certainly sucks and blows. So, it has compression and clearly has a piston. The gears must all be ok as I turn the flywheel and the piston moves as it should.
This has been sitting in a dry storage area for many years and appears to have the original Magneto and carburettor. I had a Type B Neracar Sheffield Simplex engine before. That one was fitted with a Senspray carb. This one has the alternate Binks Eccles (1920) Ltd carburettor that still has the cable and lever attached. The lever does not have the full clamp.
As far as I can see there are no welds, repairs or cracks to the engine cases. The fins only have one that has been chipped. It’s in the images and is on the lower section of the cylinder.
If you are lucky enough to have a British-made Ner-A-Car, then this Neracar Sheffield Simplex engine is an ideal opportunity for you to have a spare, complete with ancilliaries.
Other vintage motorcycle parts from 1915 to 1930
My particular interest is all motorcycles that are pre-1940. However, 1915 to 1930 covers a huge period in terms of motorcycle development. Occasionally, I have spare parts available for this period. Please take a look at the vintage motorcycle spares for sale here.
