1920’s Vintage Velophare Rapid dynamo cycle lamp Brevete S.G.D.G
Although this is a bicycle dynamo, it wouldn’t look out-of-place on a veteran motorcycle. It’s an interesting and quirky little piece of history.
Known as a “magneto” in the 1927 French catalogue as shown in the images. It’s a rare Brass bicycle light driven by a dynamo. It is listed as “LE VELOPHARE. Equipement électrique à magnéto génératrice pour l’éclairage des bicyclettes.”
A French museum has a Velophare Rapid dynamo cycle lamp in their collection. It is catalogued as being from 1927. As stated above, I have also found a copy of a French catalogue, dated 1927, showing this Velophare Rapid dynamo cycle lamp.
It’s a clever, yet simple, design. The small headlight is fitted to the dynamo. The whole outfit is clamped to the frame. You remove the main brass body from a small clip at the rear, and then turn it through about 100 degrees, so that the friction ring rubs against the tyre. The headlamp is set at an appropriate angle so that it is upright when working.
Condition of the Velophare Rapid dynamo cycle lamp
It clips into place and turns to the right angle. The clamp is missing one piece. But any old clamp half will work with it. The dynamo turns freely. But, I can’t get the lamp to come on. It might be as simple as changing the bulb.
The peak on the lamp is slightly out of shape on one side. It appears to have the original fluted glass.
