JAP V-twin engine. 1922 Side Valve 980cc for vintage motorcycles & Possibly Morgan.
Apart from possibly being useful for a 1920’s Morgan three-wheeler, this JAP V-twin engine could be utilised in a “parts-project”. It could also be used in any number of motorcycle makes as a genuine replacement.

If you are in the USA, this is a great opportunity to own one of the famous 980cc JAP V-Twins, without having to import it.
The side valve 980cc JAP V-twin engine was used by the following manufacturers. Of course, they didn’t all use this engine in 1922. However, they used a variant.
  • Brough Superior SS80
  • Zenith Model L. Some used the 680cc and 770cc engines.
  • Acme 8hp
  • Rex Acme
  • Matchless Model H
  • Coventry Eagle Flying 8
  • BAT Model 5
  • Royal Enfield 180.
  • Campion
  • NUT (Not sure about them using the 980cc, but they used 770 / 680cc engines)
  • Universal. (They came in the 1930’s and still used a SV engine, but by then the design was a little different)
The 980cc side valve engine is a great one to use. It has approximately 8hp and enough power to effortlessly push you along with a sidecar and passenger.
I get asked if I have a JAP V-twin engine all the time. They are rarely available as a loose item. Early 1920’s side valve 980cc JAP V-twin engines are extremely hard find, especially in good condition and with the ancillaries.
I agree. It’s not cheap. But find another one in similar condition. Then think what value it will add to that bare frame you have kicking about.

About this JAP V-twin engine

It is owned by a friend in the USA. The engine is with him near Charlotte, NC. (More on delivery etc below)
He bought it from a dealer in Europe some time ago, as a spare for an early Brough. He has never used it and it has been stored in a clean & dry environment.
We know nothing of the history and my friend is happy to remove the cylinder barrels to show the bores, pistons and rings. The engine number ends in /D, indicating that this engine was originally supplied with flat-top iron pistons.

Condition:

As stated, we don’t have any history on it. However, it appears to be in very good condition and with original parts.
The barrels have one or two small chips. You can see them in the images. They appear to be the original barrels.
The engine cases are in good condition and they are a matched pair from original build. See the matching case number stamps in the images.
It comes with the carb manifold, an Amal brass carb and a decent Lucas magneto.
It is also fitted with a pair of JAP cylinder primers.
The engine number stamp is clear and is unmolested.

Other JAP engine parts and engines.

Occasionally, I have some. If you don’t see what you need on the JAP engine page here, send me a note with your needs.
