1922 Vintage motorcycle Triumph Model H engine cases & contents of timing chest
How do I know these vintage Triumph Model H engine cases are from 1922?
There are three letters stamped on the side of the engine case. They end in “RR”. Triumph used a coding system up to the end of 1923. They had a series of letters that were used to determine the month and year of build. RR stands for 1922.
Here’s where Triumph lead us astray. The range of sequential numbers for 1922 are between 80068 and 84673. This engine begins with 85xxx. It’s not until you realise that Triumph, like many manufacturers, began their “Year” in September of the previous year. So, the numbers stamped also equate to the calendar year of 1922.
The cases have the crank and the contents of the timing chest as shown in the images. It has the external and internal valve lifter mechanisms. The cases are an original pairing from the factory as they have matching numbers.
If you don’t need these Triumph Model H engine cases, the rest of it would be very good for spares.
Are these for a Triumph Model H or the SD Model?
Well, I and not sure. They both had similar timing chests and also had the valve lifter as shown in the photo’s. I imagine there wasn’t a lot of difference with the crank cases. The barrel bore was probably the main difference. Please make certain that these cases are what you need before you buy.
Condition of these Triumph Model H engine cases
I have cleaned the cases and inspected them for any serious damage. They have been repaired on the underside of one case half. I am not sure what was used for the repair but it’s not correct ali weld. It looks like these cases had suffered from heavy corrosion on the lower part.
The rest of the cases look OK. The engine number is clear and unmolested. The crank turns smoothly and is not rusty. It’s oily inside the timing chest. The cam gear seems OK, with good teeth.
