The side valve 980cc JAP V-twin engine was used by the following manufacturers. Of course, they didn’t all use this engine in 1923. However, they used a variant of it.
  • Brough Superior SS80
  • Chater-Lea used a 976cc engine, added to the range in 1921.
  • HRD used a large capacity JAP V-twin engine from 1924.
  • Zenith Model L. Some used the 680cc and 770cc engines. They fitted the 980cc engine in 1926.
  • Acme 8hp
  • Rex Acme
  • Matchless Model H
  • Coventry Eagle Flying 8. I think the spark plugs were in a different location to the ones fitted here.
  • BAT Model 5
  • Royal Enfield 180.
  • Campion
  • NUT (Not sure about them using the 980cc, but they used 770 / 680cc engines)
  • Universal. (They came in the 1930’s and still used a SV engine, but by then the design was a little different)
The 980cc side valve engine is a great one to use. It has approximately 8hp and enough power to effortlessly push you along with a sidecar and passenger.
The K-series of JAP engines were made from 1918 until 1931. 1921 was when they started to supply the KT version. The KT engine has a Bore and stroke of 85.7mm x 85mm.

About this JAP V-twin engine

Little is known about the rebuild. It was sold to me as an engine that is “ready to go”. I always consider an engine not ready to go until it has been taken apart and checked. I’d advise you do the same here.
Having said this, it does really appear to have been rebuilt. See my comments in “Condition” below. There is evidence of new gaskets in all the right places.
The engine number is shown in the images.

Condition of the 1923 Side Valve 980cc JAP V-twin engine.

As stated, we don’t have any history on it. However, it appears to be in very good condition and with original parts.
The barrels have one or two small chips. You can see them in the images. They appear to be the original barrels.
The engine cases are in good condition and they are a matched pair from original build.
The engine number stamp is clear and is unmolested.
I have removed the timing gear cover to show that the parts are inside. When I removed it, the grease was a little dark. I was expecting it to be fresh. So, I removed a spark plug. The plug had a little combustion material on it. So, am going to assume that the engine has been run for a very short time.
I have drained the remaining oil.
You can see quite a few images with the JAP pistons. The pistons are quite clean and the rings are all still attached. The barrel bores look fine too.
The previous owner was quite keen on using silicone sealant. I have removed some of it. It’s up to you what you do with the rest. If I was going to run this engine, I would definitely strip it and clean it of all old sealant, before the rebuild. Despite this, you are buying a JAP V-twin engine that will need to be checked over before you run it.

Other JAP engine parts and engines.

Occasionally, I have some. If you don’t see what you need on the JAP engine page here, send me a note with your needs.
