1924 / 1925 AJS Side Valve single 350cc engine 2-3/4 hp Model B or B1
I believe this engine would be for one of the following models:
- Model B Standard Touring
- Model B1 Sporting
The engine number is 36226 which seems to be about right for 1924 / 25. The only other evidence that I have for identification / dating is a set of stamps on the primary side, just below the barrel. It reads “Model 1924”. I’ve had this before with other makers and it turned out that the engines were often a year later than the stamp suggested. So, you decide.
Of course, if you have access to definitive records, I’d be very happy to put an inaccuracy right.
I have shown what the engine would look like when installed. The bike is not for sale.
I have another similar AJS SV 350cc engine that has a number plate riveted to the engine. The plate that showed the unique number and also states that it is an “AJ Stevens & Co 1914 Ltd” engine. I can’t find the plate on this engine but it does have the engine number on the front left shoulder of the cases.
The engine case halves also have matching numbers, indication that they are a matched pair from first build.
Condition: Selling as an engine for restoration. However, it is a very good start. From what I can see, it’s pretty complete, including the crank, connecting rod and piston. The fins are decent (although they are missing between the valve tappets and a few others – see pictures) . There are no valve springs or caps. The ones that came with the engine didn’t fit.
I currently have another AJS 350 SV engine which does not have a piston. Please see my other items.
