1925 Model 5 Sunbeam Light Solo engine for rebuild.

Flat tank Marston Sunbeam 500cc vintage motorcycle from the 1920’s.

  • 499cc side valve single cylinder
  • Short Stroke 85 x 88mm
  • 3-1/2H.P.
  • Engine cases match

This is the short stroke SV Sunbeam for owners who had sporting preferences.

From the sequential number on the engine, it was supplied around 1925. I say “around” because the “Robert Champ” book that I have lists the Sunbeam Light Solo engine numbers range from 15301 in 1924 through to 16574 in 1926. So, without access to the factory records, I think it’s fair to say that the engine here is probably dated 1925.

This Sunbeam Light Solo engine is not complete. It’s a decent representation though. The main items that are missing include the piston, a valve guide, valves / springs and valve caps.

Importantly though, it has the timing gears in the timing chest, together with the valve lifter. The machine screws for the timing cover appear to be the correct ones with a slightly raised head.

It comes with the correct cylinder head bolts. There are four of them. One of the studs came out (with the nut). It also comes with the magneto chain drive gear (as shown).

The timing cover has the original “The Sunbeam” timing cover badge.

Condition of the Sunbeam Light Solo engine

Overall it’s good. I haven’t cleaned it completely. But I have cleaned it enough to check it over.

Aside from the parts that are missing (mentioned above), it seems complete. The crank turns freely without excessive play.

The engine cases are in decent condition. There are no cracks or repairs that I can see. One of the lower engine mounts has some corrosion. But, it’s fine to use.

The barrel looks decent. It will need a light hone before use. The fins are good too. There are some very minor chips.

The valve cap threads, the exhaust threads and the inlet threads are all fine.

Other Sunbeam parts

I have a few. Please take a look at the other Sunbeam items for sale.
