1937 AJS Model 22 engine cases for the relatively rare Twin Port 246cc, with Bore of 62.5mm x Stroke of 80mm.

Unless you’re an expert on prewar AJS models, it’s unlikely you’ve ever heard of this rare 250cc twin port single, the Model 22. Apparently, there are 14 survivors recorded on the current VMCC register. There may be more out there, but that’s a fairly low number.

AJS models started with AJS of Wolverhampton giving models a letter to identify them. They went through a period of using year code letters. In 1933 AMC had now purchased AJS. They dropped the year code letter prefix letter using the last two digits of the year, prefixing the model number. E.G. 33/1. The engine number for this set of AJS Model 22 engine cases can be seen in the images. The relevant year / model numbers are 37/22.

The Model 22 was one of two new AJS overhead-valve machines introduced for 1935. The other being the 348cc Model 26. Both of them featured a vertical cylinder, twin-port cylinder head and forward-mounted magneto. Enclosure of the valve gear had arrived by 1936 and a single-port ’head – standard on the competition version – became available later. Production continued until 1940.

Condition of these 1937 AJS Model 22 engine cases

Good. There are no apparent cracks, welds, or other repairs. The threads appear to be fine too. There is one tappet. The bushes look fine. The cylinder barrel studs could do with replacing. I am not 100% convinced that these are an original pairing from factory. However, the mating surfaces seem to meet-up well.

The engine number is clearly stamped and unmolested.

Even the underside of these AJS Model 22 engine cases are free of the usual corrosion.
