This original prewar Triumph Pre Unit Rigid Outer Primary Cover has the cast number T480.
According to my prewar Triumph parts book for 1938, this cover was supplied for the T80, T90, 6S and 5T Speed Twin. So, this is a Prewar Triumph Pre Unit Rigid Outer Primary Cover that morphed into the number T480A from 1946 until the end of 1953 / start of 1954.
Having checked the various years of Triumph parts lists, T480 / T480A was used as clutch cover on the following rigid framed Triumphs:
- 1938 / 39 (and war years): T80, T90, 6S and 5T
- 1946 (T480A): 5T & T100
- 1947/8: as in 1946
- 1949/50: 5T & T100, with the 6T Thunderbird in 1950
- 1951: 5T, T100 and 6T.
- 1952: as in 1951
- 1953: 6T, T100 and T100C.
If you are looking for a primary cover for a 3T, the number was T478 / T478A. It’s a little different and was also supplied for the TR5 for some of the production.
If you are looking for an inner cover to go with T480 / T480A, look for a cast number of T483. ( Double check suitability, as I know the Tr5 inner cover is different)
However, as I am sure you are already aware, finding a genuine, original, Prewar Triumph Pre Unit Rigid Outer Primary Cover for the 5T Speed Twin, Tiger 80 / T90 and 6S isn’t easy. So, here’s your chance.
Condition of the Prewar Triumph Pre Unit Rigid Outer Primary Cover T480
It’s used. But it’s not the usual repaired version. It has been well looked after. It does have a couple of small marks. I have shown them in the images. There is a small dark mark on the leading edge of the raised section. It doesn’t look like a repair. There is no evidence of a repair on the inside of this area. I have shown the inside in the images too.
There is the tiniest amount of corrosion on the rear edge. It will polish out. On the subject of polishing, I have not attempted any polishing as I want you to see that this cover is unmolested.
On the inside, there are some fairly deep score marks as shown. If it was me, I would leave them alone. They are repairable.
