They say “The devil is in the detail”. This must be the Devil’s machine! It’s full of correct details. The owner rebuilt this beautiful pre-unit 5T Triumph Speed Twin about 10 years ago. It has certainly stood the test of time. It has had regular, but limited, use as the rebuilt Triumph Chronometric “Revulator” suggests. It has just 3003 miles showing. In fact, the bike had an uneventful run-out just two weeks ago.

This bike wasn’t detailed for the pictures. This is just how the owner keeps it.

If I was in the market for a rigid frame pre-unit 5T Triumph Speed Twin, this would be the one that I would buy. It’s well sorted and isn’t fresh from a rebuild. It’s correct, right down to the rare pre-war Bakelite steering damper knob. (In 1946, Triumph would still use some pre-war stock).

The fluted glass on the headlamp sets the bike off nicely. The fuel tank is stunning and even the instrument panel is correct. The lamp switch might be a replacement but the Triumph oil gauge is a nice early piece.

It is fitted with a nice, reliable, BTH magneto.

Condition of the pre-unit 5T Triumph Speed Twin

When the bike was rebuilt, everything was worked through. The engine was subjected to a full rebuild. Bear in mind that it has only done a little more than a shake-down in 10 years. It’s sorted! The gearbox works as it should. The owner is fastidious about detail. Note the small gaiter on the joint where the clutch cable meets the actuator. Most people don’t bother with this.

Of course, the paint is 10 years old too. There are a few very minor marks and I would be happy to a video walk around for any prospective buyer if you can’t make a viewing yourself. Take a look at some of the detailed images. The gold lines on the two-piece rear mudguard are the correct width and line up beautifully. The wheel rims are also correctly painted. There’s even an authentic dealer badge on the top of the rear light housing.

Other Triumph items that make this rebuild a success, are things like the Lucas King of the Road Bakelite battery box and the Lucas Altette horn. Of course, it has the correct shape Lycett rider’s saddle for a Triumph.

Anything of note regarding the need to repair or replace items on this pre-unit 5T Triumph Speed Twin?

Probably the only small thing that I feel the need to point out, is the small amount of damage to the outer primary cover. You can buy these covers new. It could be replaced very easily, if you feel the need. I like it as it makes this pre-unit 5T Triumph Speed Twin look like it has been used.

There are over 30 pictures here. Please have a good look through them.
