This engine came to me as a complete unit including the carburettor. It was a bit rough but it had all the right bits in the right places and has decent fins. I thought I might use it, but I’ve decided to use a different engine as it’s already built.

Engine cases have matching case halves.

I have stripped the engine down a bit just to make sure that it wasn’t completely knackered. The crank turns by hand when the spark plugs have been removed. The iron barrels and cylinder head are in decent condition. Remarkably, the fins are good on both. The rocker covers and rockers are fitted. There is one small chip to the head under one of the rocker cover fixings. It’s the outer rear timing side and could be repaired with brazing as it doesn’t take a lot of load. A peek down the bores reveals that the pistons exist and they go up-and-down when I turn the crank. I’ve currently no idea what size they are as I haven’t got that far..

The cylinder head has the valves fitted and the engine comes with the original magneto (although I have no idea if the mag is any good). The front fixing hole on the timing cover is now a bit oval. It’s still complete and the engine casing hole is fine.

Supplied with the original Amal 376/288 carb.

Bottom line, this engine is pretty complete. It just needs a rebuild. The pushrods are only things that I have noticed that are missing. Why someone would clamp up a perfectly good engine without them is beyond me. I guess they needed them for another engine.

So, if you’re after a period-correct 5T Speed Twin Triumph 500cc Twin from 1946 then this is a good option.

To be clear, this is not a “runner”.
