250cc 2-Stroke engine for 1923 Baby Triumph Junior Model LW Round tank.

It turns fine and has the piston fitted.

This is an interesting “Baby” Triumph engine. It must be a very late one in the production as Triumph ceased production of this Model LW with the round tank, in 1923. According to my table on dating this model, the engine numbers ran from 8365 to 10550 in the last year. However, those records are generally accepted as a guide.

The number on this engine is 10699. The very knowledgable Richard Cornelius has provided information that this engine is stamped for November, 1923. If you ever need a good read on early Triumph motorcycles, his father’s books are a great source. You can get them from Richard, direct.

Triumph raised the capacity to 250cc from engine number 8501. This is one of the 250cc versions.

About the Baby Triumph Junior Model LW

The Model LW (Light Weight) was also known as the Junior. It was nicknamed The Baby as it was the baby of the Triumph model family. Competitors suggested that it was nicknamed The Baby because it never went anywhere without a rattle.

There is rumour that Siegfied Bettmann, founder of the Triumph Motorcycle Company, came up with the idea of creating a lighter motorcycle for the masses. This included ladies and new riders. The rumour goes that his partner, or three daughters enjoyed riding behind the works testers. He took an LW home for his eldest daughter and made the first sale. Who knows if any of that is true. I suspect a little of it is. I also suspect that a man with his business acumen will have spotted a gap in the market and his daughter riding one was great PR.

When the Baby Triumph Junior was launched, the legal riding age was fourteen. Imagine the size of the market available. Triumph got it right. It was a relatively simple two-stroke motorcycle with just a 2-speed transmission and no clutch or kickstart. It also had a low saddle height which made it available to a market that their taller machines had excluded.

The LW began life with a 225cc engine and was raised to 250cc from engine number 8501. This was early 1923. The LW had been used in the First World War as a service machine.

Condition of the engine for the LW Model Baby Triumph Junior

It’s in remarkably good condition for a vintage motorcycle engine that’s over 100 years old.

The fins on the barrel look fine. It comes with almost everything. The only part that is messing is the carb inlet manifold.

It turns over by hand and you can see that the piston is fitted in the images. I have shown three images through the carb inlet.

I can’t see any welds, or cracks in the cases. The number stamp is clear. The cases are a matched pair too.

Bottom line, it is being sold as an engine requiring a full check-over at the least as I have no prior knowledge of it running.

Other early Triumph parts.

Occasionally, I have some early Triumph parts. I used to have a Model SD and kept a stock of spares. They have slowly dwindled to very small items. However, I get offered parts regularly. So, please get in touch and let me know what you need.  In the meantime, please browse the early Triumph parts

I happen to have a Baby Triumph Junior LW carburettor available at the moment. Please enquire. If it has sold, I will do my best to find another. I am also aware of a frame and a gearbox that could be bought to go with this engine.
