500cc JAP engine for sale 1938 OHV single cylinder with a single port head.
Prewar Single cylinder J A Prestwich Overhead Valve 500cc engine in good condition.

These OHV engines are useful for projects and installation in a variety of 1930’s sports motorcycles. Some of the marques that used an engine like this include:
- Cotton,
- OK Supreme,
- Montgomery,
- Lady,
- AJW,
- Universal,
- Radco,
- Eysink,
- Husqvarna,
- Imperia,
- New Imperial,
- possibly Terrot (Although I think Terrot used 350cc versions), and many others. Of course, they work well with prewar Special builds too.
The numbers on the engine show that this is an engine from 1938. The first three letters are KOZ.
- KO shows that it is an OHV 500cc engine.
- Z is for “dry sump lubrication”.
- The letter after the first oblique is O. That shows it’s from 1938.
There is an old receipt for work done by J A Prestwich. It included re-trueing of the flywheels, a new piston and rings, cam lever and valves were ground in. There was a bit more, but you get the idea. Having said this, it was done in 1955! See the images for condition, and my comments below.
The engine cases have matching numbers, indicating that the two halves are a pair from original build. The engine number is shown in the images and it is unmolested.
Condition of the 500cc JAP engine
This 500cc JAP engine is being sold on the basis that you are buying an engine that will still need to be dis-assembled and checked over as it has stood for a while. It turns over very smoothly and it has good compression.
All of the fins look good and the engine cases appear to be without damage. There are plenty of images that you can zoom-in on. You are also welcome to come and check it over (externally) before purchase.
It is supplied with the exhaust nut. The exhaust threads on the head are good and the nut turns freely.
