Beaded edge Vintage / Veteran motorcycle Belt drive Rear wheel & front wheel both with hubs.
The belt drive rim is V-shaped.
This is a set of original front and rear wheels. They are probably for a lightweight vintage flat tank motorcycle. They might even suit a Sun motorcycle project that I currently have for sale (Tank, frame and girder forks). They are about the right size for bikes like the small Calthorpe around 1915.
I bought them as spares for a little Douglas 2-3/4HP project that I am working on. The rear is definitely too small. The front is the right diameter but the hub isn’t a Douglas one. So, they are now available for someone else to use.
The front wheel is in reasonable condition. At least, it’s round and without any nasty issues apart from age-related marks. The hub looks Ok and the thread on one side is fine.
The rear wheel has has some join repairs and needs a bit more work as I have shown the mis-shaped areas in the images. Don’t expect a perfect rear wheel. I’m sure that you can replace the main rim. The brake rim looks fine and the hub is OK too.
Dimensions. Obviously, these old wheels had dimensions quoted with the dimension of the fitted tyre. So, I can only offer the following:
Front
- Diameter as you see it: 21″
- Full width of the rim: 2-1/8″
- Width of rim inside where the tyre fits: 1-3/4″
- Hub is about 4″ wide
Rear
- Diameter as you see it: 20-1/4″
- Full width of the rim: 1-3/4″”
- Width of rim inside where the tyre fits: 1-3/8″
- Brake rim outside diameter: 17-3/8″
- Brake rim inside diameter: 15-1/2″
I don’t have any other parts like spindles and caps. Also, I don’t know what the hubs are off for certain.
