Beardmore Precision engines were supplied to many motorcycle manufacturers. Beardmore Precision made their own motorbikes too. I counted 139 different manufacturers that used Precision engines!

The Company began making bicycles in 1906, as Precision. It was started by Frank E Baker. After a few years, Precision ventured into making engines from 1910 ( a 499vv SV single-cylinder) and then motorcycles from 1912. They continued as “Precision” until 1919.

Around 1919, Precision were employing around 800 people and they released a 350cc 2-stroke engine. By this time William Beardmore & Co had injected capital into the business and the company bore the name “Beardmore Precision”.

However, this business relationship was short-lived. William Beardmore & Co withdrew their capital in 1924. In addition, the original founder, Frank E Baker also left the company to concentrate on making 2-stroke engines under his own name.

The company was sold to James motorcycles in 1930.

This particular engine is one from the early 1920’s and is a Beardmore Precision engine.

About this Beardmore Precision engine

It’s the engine for the Model D. The Model D began as early as 1912 and ran up to 1919 as a “Precision” product. After some capital injection from Mr Beardmore, the Model D carried the Beardmore Precision name from 1920 until 1924.  The engine number is a very low number, so I suspect it is an engine from 1920. See the images for the number.

It’s a 348cc single cylinder side-valve four stroke engine. “D” denotes the Touring and Tourist Trophy models.

Condition:

For the most part, the engine is complete. As you can see, it doesn’t have the outer magneto chain cover.

The engine number is clear and un-molested. There is a different number on the magneto cover. Perhaps, it was for a different engine?

The engine cases don’t appear to have any cracks, or weld repairs.

The barrel / head fins are good, with one or two fins chipped. It has a pair of valve caps and one valve guide, but no valves / springs / tappets or collets.

I have shown what there is inside the timing chest. It appears to be complete, with the exception of the tappets coming through from the top.

The barrel appears to be in good condition internally. There will be a few marks from years of storage, but no nasty scores.

The crank turns and it has a connecting rod (#5224) and  even the iron piston, with rings.

This early Beardmore Precision engine would make a very nice engine for any number of vintage motorcycle makes. In fact, if you own a Model D, this would be a good spare to have.

Note: It is being sold as an incomplete engine and it will need to be rebuilt.
