Believed Original Matchless M3/S Sports Solo fuel tank C1927.

The Matchless M3/S Sports Solo was made prior to the famous Matchless Model X. This gas, petrol, fuel tank is more like a Brough, Coventry Eagle Flying 8, McEvoy one. However, from what I can see, there are differences.

I am offering this on behalf of the owner who bought it as a replacement Brough tank. As it’s not correct, it’s available.

I am not certain that it is for a Matchless M3/s. It is the closest match that I can find. If you know for sure, I would be interested to know. There is a chance that it might suit the Coventry Victor.

I researched the Coventry Eagle Flying 8 models through the years. They began with a cap either side of the tank and an oil hand pump on the right. This design seemed to range between 1925 – 28. In 1929, It looks like they removed the hand pump and fitted a speedometer. The speedo is centred in the tank between the rider and the fuel caps.

It would be great for a 20’s sports bike project, or perhaps even for the make / model that it was made for.

Dimensions are approximate: 

  1. Width between the front mounts (centres):  99mm(3.89″)
  2. Width between the rear mounts:  99mm(3.89″)
  3. Distance between the front and rear mounts:  320mm (12.5″)
  4. Width of the centre tunnel (if i varies, please let me have both dimensions):  50mm (2″)  but flares out to 80mm at rear end where it meets the saddle.
  5. Length of the centre tube allowing for the recesses at front and rear: 400mm (15 3/4″)
  6. Overall outer length of the tank: 570mm (22 3/8″)

 

UPDATE: Since I wrote the original ad, an owner of a rare Matchless M5 has contacted me and confirmed that this tank is the same as the one on his motorcycle. We think this tank is dated either 1927 or 1928.

Condition of the Matchless M3/S Sports Solo fuel tank.

As you can see from the images it is a used gas tank. It has marks and some pitting on the chrome. It also has a dent in the front as shown in the images. A panel beater would be able to return the dent to the correct form.

Inside, it has been preserved with a little light oil. It will need a clean out as it looks a little rough inside. The threads look OK.
