Big bearing Pre Unit Triumph 500cc Twin engine with Ali Close-Fin head & barrel

Models: T100, 5T, Speed Twin

This big bearing motor is for sale as an engine that requires a rebuild. There are parts missing like rocker boxes, push rods and pistons but they are easy to source and probably ought to be replaced anyway. Please see the images for what is included.

The timing chest seems to be all there and the crank turns smoothly by hand. The connecting rods are fitted to the crank. The barrel and head are of the close fin ali variety. The head cast # is E2679 (I think that’s a T100 item) and the barrels have the cast # E2958 which show up in the 1953 parts list for the TR5 and T100/T100c models. The number might suit other models and years. I just happen to have a 1953 list.

The timing side case half number is E3314. I understand that this is correct for a 1954 big bearing case. So, it’s reasonable to assume that this is a 1954 – on bottom end. I also understand that the experts out there have been known to use these 5T cases for 650cc barrels.

Of note on condition:

Cylinder head. It has had a small fin tip repair. It needs to be finished really. The rest of the fins are good. It has 8 stud holes and the chambers look nice. It could do with a good clean.

Barrels. Externally, it’s nice. The barrels look OK to me, but I’d always say a rebuild should have newly honed barrels at the least. Look closely at one of the studs on the exhaust side. It looks like it has had a sleeve / collar fitted. The head does not currently fit on this. It might be because the sleeve fitted another head.

Cases. Generally good but a little grubby. There is NO NUMBER. The cases show “5T” but no number after that. If you’re going to use it off road, then this is probably the ideal engine to rebuild as you won’t need the number. If you need a number, I happen to have other cases but they are for earlier years. I won’t include a spare set of cases but I will let you have them at a very sensible price.
