C1902-1903 Veteran Rex motorcycle engine parts for sale.

It’s not often that you have the opportunity to buy original, very early, Rex motorcycle engine parts. I happen to have a 1904 Rex currently available for sale, so it was fairly easy to make a comparison.

It might be possible to deliver to Northern France, Belgium or The Netherlands. Please ask.

Also, I will be going to “Where is Anna” in N. Belgium this year. I could deliver it then. If you need it earlier, talk to me.

The engine number on this particular engine is very low. It can be seen in the images. Just three numbers: 2**.

As you can see in the images, this Rex motorcycle engine has many useful parts, except the engine cases. They are well past being of any use.

What you can use for spares include:

  • A very good cast iron cylinder barrel
  • Primer tap
  • Pulley (with a small nick in it)
  • Very good piston, with good rings, that still fits the barrel well
  • Connecting rod
  • Crank
  • Valve etc down to the small timing case and contents.
  • Some engine mounts that could be good for patterns.

So, if you are building a very early Pioneer Rex, these parts would be very helpful to have on the shelf.

Why do I think this Rex motorcycle engine is from around 1902-1904?

  • The square barrel dates this engine immediately. It is for the engines that used the surface carburettor arrangement. They bought out the Side Valve engine in 1905.
  • I found a 1903 example, with an engine number of 573, which suggests that this engine is either from 1902 or early 1903.
  • The exhaust was a square arrangement, cast into the side of the barrel.
  • When comparing this engine to the 1904 model, you can see that they moved the spark plug from the front to the rear.
  • The bore on the barrel is around 76mm, which is standard bore around that time.

Condition of the Rex motorcycle engine

The cases are of no real use. Well, I suppose the engine number is of some use.

Pretty well everything else is good. The crank does not turn but it’s there and doesn’t appear to be badly corroded. I have cleared quite a bit of the case corrosion, where it touches the crank. It cleans off fine.

The barrel bore is nice. The piston and rings are in good condition. The conrod moves on the big end and little end. I haven’t opened up the little brass timing chest.

The barrel is lovely. The fins are generally good. I think there is one fin with damage. There are plenty of pictures.
