Calthorpe Two-Stroke Two Speed Model engine from 1923 with CAV Magneto and flywheel.
This is a seemingly complete two-stroke 2-1/2H.P. Calthorpe flat tank motorcycle engine. When new, it would have a bore of 67mm and stroke of 69mm. It is a 243cc engine.
Calthorpe took over a British engine maker called Peco, in 1919. Calthorpe were their biggest customer and many of their models in the range used “Peco” engines.
In 1923, there were several models in the Calthorpe range. The Calthorpe Two-Stroke Two Speed model came with a primary side cover as it had chain drive from the engine to the gearbox. The Burman 2-speed Gearbox had a 3-plate clutch and kick starter. It was mounted on a neat bracket. Drive to the rear was via a ¾in. belt from gearbox pulley to rear belt rim.
The engine was specified as a two stroke of the three port type. It had heavy phosphor bronze bearings of large dimensions and a roller bearing to the big end of connecting rod.
Engine number: I have shown it in the images. It begins with A3, which places it in 1923 according to my records. Interestingly, the barrel is stamped with a number that matches the engine number. This was common practice then and suggests that this barrel is the original pairing with the bottom-end.
Condition of this Calthorpe Two-Stroke Two Speed Model engine
This engine is being sold on the basis of it being for rebuild. I believe it’s complete, but please check the images carefully. What you see is what you get.
The engine turns over smoothly. I can see the piston rise and fall. I can hear it suck and squeeze. I can see the piston is oily and that it has piston rings. The fins look decent (one is chipped near the top and is shown in the images) and the engine cases don’t have any obvious damage or welds. The magneto has the lovely original brass points cover with the advance lever.
In short, this is a good engine for the basis of a rebuild. It might run just as it is, with light re-commissioning.
It is also being sold with the CAV magneto. You are buying on the basis that the mag doesn’t work. It just appears to be all there. As you can see, it includes the mag chain and sprockets.
It also comes with the original Calthorpe timing cover.
It is extremely rare to find one of these engine with the magneto and timing cover.
