Humber Motorcycle 1920’s vintage motorcycle gearbox with kick start & Lower rail clamp mount
I’ve had this a long time. I show it to all my friends and not one of us could identify it. There’s plenty of educated guesses. There are no clear names numbers. There’s what appears to be a light suggestion that it may be a Hurth box. I wasn’t sure. Then someone very helpful suggested that it is for a Humber.
Having researched images of various Humber Motorcycles, it appears that he is correct. It appears to be for the Humber Flat Twin motorcycle. The gearbox sits under the rear cylinder. The model that I have seen it mounted to, is the Humber 4 1/2hp flat twin with a 3-speed gearbox and chain drive.
I have also seen a similar gearbox mounted to a Humber 350cc Side Valve single from 1926.
An image of a 1919 500cc model shows a different gearbox end cover. So, my best guess is that this is a 1920’s one. You decide if it’s right for your needs.
There are cast numbers:
- A little blurry but it looks like 3415819
- 5059
- C/5061
Anyway, if you’re looking for a good, vintage gearbox for a project, then this is a decent complete gearbox that will mount to the lower frame rails with the clamps. It would suit a medium to heavyweight motorcycle.
As I have not tested it, it is being sold as a box for rebuild. I would have it apart anyway, if only to re-lubricate and clean.
