Large acetylene gas generator & carbide headlamp for Veteran & Vintage motorcycles

The headlamp has a max rim diameter of 6-1/2″. So, it’s a decent size and would suit most motorcycles. It is model number 420 in the Lucas King of the Road range.

The acetylene gas generator is a Powell & Hanmer model of a size suite to this Joseph Lucas headlamp. It is approximately 8″ tall and is 3-3/8″ max diameter.

Despite being from different makers, I have offered these together as they have a similar finish. Someone has been enthusiastic with the polish and they are now down to brass and solder. I suppose you can always paint them again.

If you are only interested in either of the large acetylene gas generator & carbide headlamp, please send me a message and I will offer you a price.

The acetylene gas generator is being sold as a non-functioning item as I have not tested. However, these canisters are very simple. They come apart in the middle. You place carbide blocks in the bottom half. You put water in the upper chamber and control the drips of water onto the carbide below by turning the knurled knob on the top. The gas is vented at the top, into a tube that is fixed to your rear acetylene lamp.

Other similar carbide lamps and larger generators

I happen to have a few that I have decided to sell. There’s a reasonable selection of different carbide headlamp sizes and makes. I have quite a few rear lamps by various makers, some sidecar acetylene lamps and one or two larger carbide gas generators. Take a view through the current selection of acetylene carbide lamps here.

Condition of the large acetylene gas generator & carbide headlamp.

The Joseph Lucas, King of the Road, headlamp: It has a small scrape on the rim (as shown). The hing and clasp work fine. It still has the mirror. As you can see from the pictures, the lamp has a “wick”. I have no idea if it still functions. The glass is fitted and undamaged. The side fixing bolts look modern to me. They seem to work. I suppose a dab of black paint would work wonders on the bolt heads.

The P&H acetylene gas generator is actually in good condition externally. Again, it has been polished so much that the solder is showing in places. It has some matching wing nut clamps that look like original items. They tighten up fine and the threads are good.
