Lightweight C Type Albion gearbox with hand shift.

I am not certain that this little Albion gearbox was originally intended for a vintage motorcycle. I suspect it was probably supplied for use with a motor mower. The lack of a kick-start shaft is a bit of a clue.

The case and cover are in decent used condition. The gears shift with the hand lever.

Having said this, I see no reason why it couldn’t be used on a lightweight flat tank motorcycle if you’re prepared to push start or use one of those roller-starters.

Identification.

  1. It has a few sets of letters and numbers. The main set is MON376. I think MON might help some people to identify the intended use and brand that it was supplied to.
  2. The main case and front cover have matching number (94). I think that just indicates that the cover and case have remained as a pair since new.
  3. “C”. It has a C stamped on it. I presume this is the model of the gearbox. Here’s where my research gets a little vague. The Type C Albion was actually a featherweight gearbox for early 1920’s motorcycles. From what I can see online, they were smaller than this box. It closer resemble the Type C1, which was made for vintage lightweight motorcycles from 1928.

So, please study the images and make your own mind up.

Other small gearboxes: I have some. Please get in touch.
