Mid to late 1920’s fuel tank for the Big Port AJS Flat tank model, needing some repair to the underside.

Off to Spain
This vintage AJS gas tank is an original item. Please see the comments on condition below.
I believe it’s for the Big Port AJS Flat tank model, together with other AJS models. Note that this one has the hand oil pump only on the left side, with the two fillers on the right side. They did vary, so please make sure this is the one that you need.
For those that know, the tank does have stamped numbers on the underside. One row appears to be 1234 and underneath it is either 24 or 34. I guess it’s 24 (probably the year). Not certain though. They are hard to read.
It comes with the two old caps as shown in the pictures. One of the caps is Best & Lloyd as the “happy man” emblem. The other cap is plain, but slightly raised in the centre.
It has four fixing holes for the tank to hang off the top rail. The threads look decent, but will need a clean.
Approximate dimensions are:
- Length overall: 20″ (about 51cm)
- Height at highest point: 4″ (about 10cm)
- Width at widest point: 8″ (about 20.25cm)
If measurements are critical, let me know and I will measure it more accurately.
Condition of the Big Port AJS Flat tank
The top and sides are solid. As you can see, it has some dings, especially on the left side. The threads look OK.
The underside could do with entirely replacing. As you can see in the images, the edges have been cleaned up to reveal good metal. On the underside though, there are some holes. I have done my best to show them. They are at the front edge and close to the rear.
You are not buying a tank that you can spray up and strap onto your bike!
However, you are buying an original tank that will actually fit the frame and mounts.
I have included lots of pictures for you to assess the condition.
Other AJS parts
I have a few other AJS parts. To see the selection, please go here. At the moment, I have an AJS hand oil pump that would go well with this fuel tank for the Big Port AJS Flat tank.
