P&H veteran vintage motorcycle carbide acetylene generator, 8 inch size.
It seems that these original carbide burning acetylene gas generators are now hard to find. I have owned a few over the years, including versions by Miller and Lucas. They all perform the same function. They were designed to drop water in the upper chamber onto a block of carbide, to produce acetylene gas. The gas feeds to the lamp (front or rear), where it is burnt.
Simple enough, I guess. There are few people who actually use these carbide acetylene gas generators as they were originally intended. Instead, they are plausible accessories that adorn lovely old flat tank motorcycles.
There were really two sizes. As this is about 8 inches tall, it is the larger of the two. The larger ones were usually (but not exclusively) used for the front lamp. The smaller generators were usually for the rear lamps.
Condition:
This Powell & Hanmer, P&H, veteran / vintage motorcycle carbide acetylene generator is in reasonable condition. I have not taken it apart to check all of the components. Externally, it seems complete. It even has the fastening nuts for the clamps.
