Pre War Triumph OHV 350cc T80 vintage motorcycle engine requiring a rebuild.
This Tiger 80 engine is now offered with a spare set of engine cases. Please read on to see why having the second set of cases is helpful.
I have been holding onto this engine in the vague hope that I will be able to buy a Tiger 80 project that needed it. The time has come to sell it as I already have a T70 project and I could do with rolling some cash into that.
This engine turns over but it requires a complete rebuild as I have not even attempted to take it apart. I can see the piston rising and falling as I turn the crank by hand. I can hear the piston squishing, so it must be OK inside. The timing gears are there and as shown in the pictures. There are marks all over the engine covers but the cases are free of any major issues.
The engine number is shown in the images. It’s clear and shows the unique sequential number and the model. But, the two year letters are either very feint and I can only just make a 9 out. So, it must be a 1939 engine. There’s no malicious reason that I can think of where the year of manufacture would have been “edited”, so I’m quite sure that the Registrar at the owner’s club will help with the year.
There are two main points of note. The second set of engine cases offer a solution. I have shown the damage in the images. The casing is damaged at the point of the mag mount. The solutions are to either repair this area by welding on a sacrificial part from something like a 3H engine (which are more common), or replace the timing side half of the crank cases. The other half has the engine number anyway. Or, rebuild the engine using the second set of cases.
Any other issues? A couple. There’s a tiny bit of damage to one of the mounts on the rocker cover. It’s where the top cover meets the main rocker box. Repairable and no big issue. Also, the barrel has a few fins missing.
Bottom line, you’re getting a fairly rare ( well… hard to buy) prewar Triumph 350cc T80 engine with the rocker cover, cylinder head (valves etc fitted), all of the timing gears and the oil pump as shown, and a crank that turns with a conrod and piston inside a barrel. You are also getting the extra cases.
I know it’s not cheap but find another. I’m not asking the earth for it either.
