Post war Triumph Pre-Unit Rigid Frame gearbox Speed Twin 5T and T100
This prewar rigid framed Triumph motorcycle gearbox would suit a variety of models including: Thunderbird, 6T, T100, 5t Speed Twin etc, as long as they are the rigid framed variety. It should fit the post war 3T Deluxe too.
The main case has a cast number T264. The main gearbox casing has a number is TE5075. According to the records, this gearbox was supplied in late 1937 or up to mid 1938.
The main gearbox case cast numbers help a bit when it comes to determining when they were made. T264 seems to be just prewar and T264A / B seem to be post war. Although, I have known T264A to show on gear cases that are just prewar. By 1950 the cases had T909 and T910 on them. The inner cover is T410 and the outer cover is T411. This remained fairly constant.
The box has the selector indicator, the gear cluster and more. Please have a good look at the pictures. Ask questions if you need more info. The main case appears to be undamaged. there are no cracks or welds that I can see. The two mounts are good for a change and even the clutch cable guide / adjuster mount is intact.
This is being sold as a gearbox needing rebuild, as I haven’t touched it. At the moment, the gears don’t turn. The whole gearbox will need to be cleaned before taking it apart. The old oil is a bit like varnish now. I imagine that an ultrasonic parts cleaner will help. It will need to be taken apart, cleaned and re-assembled. The gearbox does not have all of the fixings for the covers.
So, if you have a prewar 5t Speed Twin, or maybe a Tiger 100, this gearbox will certainly be a good one to keep as a spare. Rigid framed Triumph 4 speed gearboxes are not exactly in plentiful supply. Prewar ones are even more difficult to find.
