Royal Enfield – Albion 3 speed hand change lightweight motorcycle gearbox with kick start

£198.00

Royal Enfield (Albion) 3 speed hand change lightweight motorcycle gearbox with kick start shaft.

I say “3-speed”, but I haven’t taken it apart. Some people seem to think it’s a 4-speed, but I think they are confusing it with the Albion EJ model that was very similar to the Sturmey Archer LS gearbox. This one is a little smaller. There aren’t any numbers stamped on it, other than the Pat No: 330164. This number was used on other Albion gearboxes with suffixes. So, I’m going with the assumption that this gearbox was an early one.

I have only seen this Royal Enfield / Albion gearbox on a mid 1930’s Royal Enfield 250cc Model B. It’s a hand-change model, with a kick start. The gearbox mounts are the same as this one too. It is pivotally mounted between the rear engine plates.

If you are a Royal Enfield expert, you might know if it fits the other light models of the period: 150 Models T & Z, 225cc Model A, and the 250cc Models S and S2.

As this is essential an Albion gearbox with an “Enfield” front cover, of course it was made for RE. However, I have seen this gearbox in Albion form on a Villiers powered Excelsior Scout from 1934. So, I imagine, it will suit many mid-1930’s lightweight motorcycles, especially the two-stroke models.

You decide if it’s right for you.

Condition: It clicks through gears. It turns smoothly. However, I have not tested it in a motorcycle. The cases are free from any obvious damage and the frame mounts look fine.
