Small Carbide gas generator for acetylene rear lamp on Veteran & Vintage motorcycles.

There is no maker’s mark on this one. It could be a Joseph Lucas, Powell & Hanmer, Miller or some other maker. All I know is that it was Made in England as that is stamped on the base.

It’s for sale as a decorative accessory for your flat tanker. Someone has polished all of the paint and nickel off this small carbide gas generator. I suppose you can repaint it.

Total height is about 6-1/2″

If you have been looking for one of these small carbide gas generators, then you will know how difficult they are to find. This one shows its age here and there. But, as an accessory on your early motorcycle, I’m sure it will look great.

It is being sold as a non-functioning acetylene gas generator as I have not tested. However, these canisters are very simple. They come apart in the middle. You place carbide blocks in the bottom half. You put water in the upper chamber and control the drips of water onto the carbide below by turning the knurled knob on the top. The gas is vented at the top, into a tube that is fixed to your rear acetylene lamp.

Other similar carbide lamps and larger generators

I happen to have a few that I have decided to sell. There’s a reasonable selection of different carbide headlamp sizes and makes. I have quite a few rear lamps by various makers, some sidecar acetylene lamps and one or two larger carbide gas generators. Take a view through the current selection of acetylene carbide lamps here.

Condition of the small carbide gas generator

It has a couple of dings as shown in the images. Someone has polished it down to the brass. The lower half is mildly pitted. The wing nuts are not a pair but they do the job and I am not convinced that the clamp ring is original. Again, it seems to do the job.
