Sunbeam 250cc Model 16 High Cam vintage motorcycle crank, flywheels & conrod.
The Model 16 250cc lightweight Sunbeam was a “one year only” motorcycle. It was introduced in 1935 as a replacement for the Model 14. However, the Model 14 was re-introduced in 1936 as replacement for the Model 16. It used most of the components of the 250cc Model 14. However, Sunbeam decided that they needed a sportier version with an engine that looked like the other genuine high-cams. So, they replaced the standard 250cc engine with something like a high-cam AJS.
For those that don’t know, the easy way to differentiate the barrel and head, from the standard Model 14 ones was the stud spacing. The fore and aft studs were different widths on the High Cam Model 16.
This is a Model 16 high cam crankshaft with flywheels and the connecting rod. The crank pin was the same as model 9 and the drive side shaft will interchange with 250 350 Sunbeams from 1936 onwards. But, as a complete unit, it’s suitable for a Model 16 from 1935.
Condition of the Sunbeam 250cc Model 16 High Cam vintage motorcycle crank.
Used. I would advise taking it completely apart, and perhaps replacing the big end. Not because I think there’s anything wrong with it. It’s just not worth building an engine up around a big end that you have not checked. Overall, it all looks fine. The connecting rod looks straight and the flywheels are decent.
So, if you are lucky enough to own a Sunbeam 250cc Model 16 High Cam vintage motorcycle, then this is a good opportunity to buy a spare crank / flywheels and connecting rod.
