Velocette KSS cylinder head. OHC Ali head with rocker covers.
This is a Mk2 Velocette KSS cylinder head. It comes with the rocker gear caps only.
I am not sure what year this head is from. It will date between 1935 and 1947. The head has “K17” cast into the top / side. The caps have K20/6.
A brief background on the Velocette KSS.
The Velocette KSS (K for overhead camshaft, SS for super sports) first appeared in 1925.
The even-sportier KTT model was developed from the Velo KSS design. The KTT was the first over-the-counter production racer to become available to the general public.
In 1933 the KSS got a four speed gearbox and in 1935 the KSS was completely redesigned.
This is where this cylinder head comes in.
The MkII version of the KSS featured many improvements including a new aluminium-alloy cylinder head with enclosed valve-gear, together with the cradle frame and heavyweight Webb forks.
The KSS resumed production, post-war, in November 1946. In 1947, it was further updated, with (optional) Dowty Oleomatic telescopic front forks. I believe the last KSS models were produced at the end of 1947.
Expensive to produce, the KSS was dropped from the range at the year’s end.
Condition of this Velocette KSS cylinder head.
Remarkably good.
All of the fins are good. It has a few marks here and there. The cylinder head is bare, with the exception of some valve seats and old the rocker covers.
The facing looks fine.
