Very early motorcycle brass Carbide Acetylene gas generator.
This beautiful generator is likely for Pioneer & Veteran motorcycles. I have had plenty of Lucas / P&H generators for the acetylene gas-powered headlamps and tail light. But, I have never seen one like this. It’s a thing of beauty.
It’s shorter and wider than the others. It is also somewhat simpler and more robust. Instead of a screw cap for the water intake, it has a perfect-fitting tapered push cap that is attached to a chain to prevent loss.
The gas outlet is thicker in diameter to other ones that I own. The brass Carbide Acetylene gas generator is mounted on a single bracket on the side. Again, this is more robust than the later ones.
As I have seen one before, it’s difficult to suggest a date that this might have been made. However, when you compare it with more “modern” refinements on some models, I suggest that this may even be before 1910.
There is no makers name stamp, or any other markings.
Dimensions are:
- Total Height: 6″
- Cylinder height 5″
- Cylinder max diameter: 4″ (excluding mount)
Condition of the brass Carbide Acetylene gas generator.
Visually, it’s good. It doesn’t have any nasty dents or scratches. Solder is visible. I have no idea if this is as it was when made, or if items have been re-attached.
The wing nuts undo to allow the two halves to be separated. There is a little chamber and a vented tray for the carbide to lay. Under the tray is sufficient space for the acetylene gas to accumulate, before being allowed to vent through the outlet on the top. The large knob in the centre of the top unscrews. I assume this is a regulator.
As I have not tested this brass Carbide Acetylene gas generator, it is being sold as an untested item.

I have a few in various states of repair. Please take a look at the lamps and generators here.
