Veteran engine for Abingdon King Dick motorcycle in very good condition.

From research, this Abingdon King Dick motorcycle engine is the fourth version of the 3-1/2 H.P. Side Valve. Abingdon King Dick (revised to AKD in 1925), first created a 3-1/2 HP engine on the 22nd November, 1909. It had a bore and stroke of 88 x 86. This engine continued until the end of 1910. They then introduced the 2nd version in 1911. It now had a bore and stroke of 85 x 88. This bore and stroke lasted right through the 4 variations until sometime in early 1916, when production ceased so that they could produce war items.

The second variation ceased production at the end of 1912. It now had a dovetailed timing chest that incorporated the cam followers. The timing chest now had a “V-shape” cast into the area between the cam followers. This distinguished it from the early motors. It also changed again for the third variation.

1913 catalogue image of the Veteran engine for Abingdon King Dick motorcycle

The third variation of the Abingdon King Dick engine, now had a timing chain cover with the Abingdon King Dick bulldog in the centre. (Like the engine for sale here). This version was offered from 1913 to early 1916. However, there was a later variation (The fourth version) that ran between 1914 and 1916. This engine still had the bulldog on the timing cover. However, it now had a more bulbous shape to the main cover for the cam gears. (like the engine I have for sale).

Please note that it seems that Abingdon King Dick ran this fourth version from 1914-1916. However, it is featured in a catalogue for 1913, as shown here.

Engine numbers, and dating:

Engine numbers are not easy to use as a precise guide on date. The engine number on this one seems to suggest that it could be anywhere between 1914 and 1916. I suggest that any buyer does their own research with a marque specialist. The engine number has 4 digits, preceded by an A. This is entirely in-keeping with Abingdon King Dick numbers.

This engine would have been supplied with one-of -three makes of carburettor when supplied new. Brown & Barlow, Amac or Senspray. It is being sold with a very nice Brown & Barlow carburettor. It has a top-feed bowl (with float and needle), and the carb slide moves as it should.

The engine also comes with the nickel plated valve caps and a priming tap. The valve lifter is fitted.

It might be possible to deliver to Northern France, Belgium or The Netherlands. Please ask.

Also, I will be going to “Where is Anna” in N. Belgium this year. I could deliver it then. If you need it earlier, talk to me.

I can also receive payment in Euros, calculated on the day of sale.

Condition of this Abingdon King Dick engine

The owner informs me that this engine has been rebuilt. I have no evidence to prove this. However, I have no reason to doubt him either. It’s clear from the images that it is externally in very good order. It turns over by hand, with good compression, and the cam followers . valve stems move when they should.

The fins are all nice and the engine cases appear to be without any obvious damage repairs. In fact, the lower portion of the engine cases is in very good condition. The mounts are all good. There outer timing cover is nicely nickel plated. It has some marks from a little corrosion in the past.

I can turm the engine over by hand.
