Veteran Vintage motorcycle gas generator 7 inch size by P&H Powell & Hanmer
It seems that these original carbide burning acetylene gas generators are now hard to find. I have owned a few over the years, including versions by Miller and Lucas. They all perform the same function. They were designed to drop water from the upper chamber onto a block of carbide in the lower chamber, to produce acetylene gas. The gas feeds from the vintage motorcycle gas generator to the lamp (front or rear), where it is burnt.
There are few people who actually use these vintage motorcycle gas generators as they were originally intended. Most people use them as plausible accessories that adorn lovely old flat tank motorcycles.
There were really two sizes. As this is about 7 inches tall, it is in the category of the larger of the two. The larger ones were usually (but not exclusively) used for the front lamp. The smaller generators were usually for the rear lamps.
Condition:
This vintage motorcycle gas generator is in reasonable condition. I have not taken it apart to check all of the components. Externally, it seems complete. I have unscrewed it and separated the top and bottom chambers. As you can see the white carbide residue in the lower chamber, it’s clear that this P&H carbide/ acetylene gas generator has been used as originally intended.
Other carbide lamps and generators to choose from
I have a selection of carbide acetylene lamps for sale. They are mostly for antique, veteran or vintage motorcycles. However, I have a few bicycle lights. They are the ones with the cycle fitting. These cycle lamps were also used on veteran flat tank motorcycles. Choose from the unusual ones through to Miller, P&H and Lucas carbide lamps. There is also a range of rear lamps and burner gas generators.
If you are looking for an antique lamp and generator for your early motorcycle, this P&H veteran / vintage motorcycle carbide acetylene generator 8 inch size would suit any size of flat tank bike. It’s the larger version.
