Large Acetylene Gas Carbide Generator for vintage & veteran motorcycles.
It is approximately 8-1/2″ tall and 3-3/4″ diameter.
I suppose a really large acetylene gas cylinder like this would be useful if you are running front, rear and sidecar lamps from it. Or, it would look impressive mounted just behind a really large acetylene lamp.
It appears to still have the original paint.
This particular carbide generator is a Powell & Hanmer model, or P&H as we all call them. It has the original badge and water stopper.
Condition of this P&H carbide generator
Used, but not abused.
It retains its original paint, badge, stopper and flow adjuster. The flow adjuster (centre), still turns. The acetylene gas outlet on the top looks OK. However, I am not selling this as a working carbide generator.
It has two inserts for the clamps to screw onto. They appear to be original. Although, I haven’t seen this arrangement before. That’s probably because most of my other carbide generators are smaller.
The clamps undo and do-up. I have shown the contents of the lower chamber (where the acetylene gas is generated).
How they work
Undo the clamps and place some carbide chunks in the lower chamber (on the cylindrical shelf). Make sure that the spring is under the shelf. This allows the gas to accumulate and then flow up the little chimney to the outlet on the outside / top of the canister.
Undo the screw plug at the top (on the edge). Fill the top chamber with water. Adjust the water flow, as you need it, into the lower chamber.
When the water mixes with the carbide, it creates acetylene gas. As mentioned, the gas then makes its way to the outlet on the top.
You will have attached correct rubber tubing (available at the VMCC website) to the outlet and to the inlet on your lamp.
Once the gas flows to the lamp, open the front cover and light the gas.
Caveat… I take no responsibility whatsoever if you blow yourself up! Take care and get an experienced person to help.
Most people just have these as accessories and decoration anyway.
Other lamps and carbide generators to choose from
I have a selection of carbide acetylene lamps for sale. They are mostly for antique, veteran or vintage motorcycles. However, I have a few bicycle lights. They are the ones with the cycle fitting. These cycle lamps were also used on veteran flat tank motorcycles. Choose from the unusual ones through to Miller, P&H and Lucas carbide lamps. There is also a range of rear lamps and burner gas generators.
Sometimes, I put a notice up on TheTimingChest Facebook page letting everyone know that something interesting is about to become available. It may be worth following the page.
