Vintage Raleigh motorcycle gearbox with Hand change control & Kickstart. Pre-1930 and post-1930 Antique Raleigh 500cc transmission box with the hand gear change control that mounts to the frame.
It also comes with the gearbox mounting plates, clutch worm and pulley.
As you can see, it’s a Sturmey Archer gearbox. Like most motorcycle manufacturers in the 1920’s, Raleigh used Sturmey Archer gearboxes. Sturmey made many variations and most of them were used by different manufacturers. This makes it difficult to be certain that a particular gearbox is for a certain bike.
However, I know this is a modified 3-speed LS-type Sturmey Archer gearbox.
In this case, it is definitely made for Raleigh. The cases are stamped with “MA782” on the outer cover and the main case. This tells us three things. 1. The cover is an original pairing with the main case. 2. The “MA” refers specifically to Raleigh. 3. “782” places it in the first year of production, 1927.
I think this gearbox type ran from 1927 – 1932. It is distinguished from others because it has two frame mounts to the front of the motorcycle. Others were supplied with studs on the top.
I am not certain, but it seems that it was supplied for both the side valve and OHV 500cc singles.
Please check this information with a marque specialist before deciding to buy.
Condition:
It is untested by me in a motorcycle. I was fortunate to have been contacted by a person who had inherited this collection of Raleigh parts. They have sat in the shed for about 10 years. The gearbox turns as it should and turns correctly when you use the kick start.
It comes with the clutch worm and the gear change link as you see it. It does not come with the long rod that links the gearbox to the hand change mechanism.
The hand change gate mechanism and frame mount all seem OK. The hand change lever moves through the gate OK. The frame mount is fine.
This Vintage Raleigh motorcycle gearbox also comes with some plates with bolts.
Other Vintage motorcycle parts.
I don’t currently have much in the way of vintage Raleigh parts. If I have anything, they will be shown on the Raleigh spares page here. However, you might like to look though the page that shows parts by type (Fuel tanks, forks, lighting etc)
