WW2 Vickers Machine Gun Oil Can ideal for prewar motorcycles for your long journeys.
If you ride a veteran or vintage motorcycle, then you will probably have a need to carry some extra oil for a quick top-up along the way.
It comes with both of the original caps and fastenings. It has the brass oil filling plug and Brass pouring spout together with the brass chains linking both.
As it is WW2 Vickers Machine Gun Oil Can, it was used to keep the gun oil. The central cap is the filler cap and the small one is the pouring spout. As we would need to top-up our machines a little quicker than this can will delver in the designed manner, I will be pouring from the main filler.
Others are available with the original leather outer cover. Of course, they are more money. This is a budget one, for someone who wants an interesting, appropriate accessory.
The top is raised to meet the central filler.
The approximate dimensions include the leather case:
- Total height (inc cap): 6″ (15cm)
- Width: 4-3/4″ (12cm)
- Depth: 3-3/8″ (8.5cm)
Although this was supplied to the British Military in 1942, I understand that they were supplied by the War Department from around 1918.
I bought a few but I only need one for my own vintage motorcycle. I will be using it to carry oil to top up the total-loss system. I imagine, they would make a great “get-you-home” fuel can too.
This WW2 Vickers Machine Gun Oil Can is very stylish and a lovely appropriate accessory for your WD or prewar vintage motorcycle.
Condition of the WW2 Vickers Machine Gun Oil Can
The can is in good condition and retains some of the WD issue paint. The brass caps and chains are tarnished. Of course, you could clean them up if that’s your thing. The inside of the WW2 Vickers Machine Gun Oil Can is good. It’s clean. See the picture. But I would suggest a thorough clean before use.
Other vintage motorcycle accessories.
I have a few accessories. I have a few horns (Bulb horns, hand push horns like Klaxons and electrical ones). I also have accessories like carbide / acetylene lamps and generators. Probably the best place to start is my page that lists parts by type.
Other War Department parts.
I don’t have loads. It’s not really my field. However, from time to time, I have a few interesting pieces. So, please check this page on WD parts and bikes
