Engine & frame numbers for the prewar Triumph motorcycles including the following models, T70, T80, T90, Speed Twin, T100.
I have compiled a series of tables to show the generally accepted information on the engine and frame numbers for Triumph motorcycles. This table shows data specifically for the veteran Triumph pre-unit twin cylinder motorcycles from 1937 to 1939.
Prewar Triumph motorcycles, 1937 to 1939
Frame and engine numbers did not match.
Frame numbers were not necessarily sequential.
Early frame numbers were prefixed with TH (Triumph Heavyweight) or TL (Triumph Lightweight).
From 1939, they had the prefix TF (Triumph Frame). TH and TL were still in use as prefixes for 1939.
The engine numbers had a prefix taken from the year. EG: 7- = 1937, 8- = 1938 etc.
Year(s) | Engine numbers | Frame numbers |
---|---|---|
1937 | 7- | Approx TL101-TL3640 & TH101-TH2390 |
1938 | 8- | Approx TL3641-TL7690 & TH2391-TH6850 |
1939 | 9- | Approx TL7691-TL11642 & TH6851-TH1075 & TF101-TF2255 |
Speed Twin, 5T, T100 |

Year and model shown as prefix to engine number. For example 8-T-33445 is a 1938 Speed Twin (later identified as “5T” instead of just “T”. Frame prefixes were-TH”for early Speed Twin. ‘TF’ for the TI00 and later 39/40 Speed Twin. |
