Vintage & Classic motorcycle valuers in UK.
Do you have a motorcycle collection that you need to sell?
Perhaps, you are down-sizing the collection?
TheTimingChest are Vintage & Classic motorcycle valuers based in the UK.
There are many reasons to have valuations done on a collection. Some people just need it for insurance purposes. This is necessary as values on vintage and classic motorcycles go down as well as up. Just like other assets, they are subject to market trends. For example, a 1969 Honda CD 175 was seen as the most basic commuter bike and had a very low desirability. Currently, there are collectors looking for mid to late 1960’s Honda’s in original condition. So, the value of a Honda CD 175 from the late 1960’s is slowly rising.
Of course, there are many reasons for selling a collection.
You might need a valuation because:
- You are raising capital
- There is a divorce involved and the motorcycles are assets that need to be accounted for.
- Sadly, a family member has passed-away and you need a probate valuation for HMRC due to the need to report for Inheritance tax (Read more here)
- You have decided that you just don’t use many of the motorbikes
- You don’t have the space for them any more.
- Some of the motorcycles are just too heavy to use.
- Some of the motorcycles are unfinished projects that you now realise will never be completed by you.
In most of these cases you probably need vintage & classic motorcycle valuers based in the UK. There are many available. Most of them are Auction Hose representatives. Their principal function is to gain instructions from you to place the items in one of their upcoming vintage & classic motorcycle auctions.
Of course, there is nothing wrong with that. But, you are limiting your advice to one valuer and one market.
If you use vintage & classic motorcycle valuers in UK, it makes sense to invite an independent valuer. One that understands the old bike market beyond auction values. A valuer who can place values on the motorcycles and offer you broader advice on how to dispose of them, if that is your need.
There are many options when disposing of vintage & classic motorcycles.
- You can market them yourself. There are the usual online sites & friends of friends. It can be long-winded and difficult negotiating over every single sale.
- You can send all, or some, of the motorcycles to a vintage & classic motorcycle auction. Many of the auction houses will come and collect the bikes from you. It is advisable to set reserves on each of the bikes. The auction house will charge a fee on the sale. This can range from around 10% to 30% depending on the auction house.
- You can find a buyer for all, or some of the motorcycles. This is invariably a motorcycle dealer. Of course, they will need to make a profit when selling. As with everything, some dealers are fairer than others.
In every case, it’s advisable to use vintage & Classic motorcycle valuers to get a clear idea on what your collection is worth before you start with sales.

What makes a valuer for Veteran, Vintage & Classic motorcycles?
Experience & current market value knowledge.
Experience comes from a full & active involvement within our hobby. It also comes from having an extensive library of information on many makes and models. This assists me with an accurate assessment of each motorcycle, or part, in a collection.
Current market value knowledge allows me to take the factual information gathered and put an accurate value on the veteran, vintage & classic motorcycle collection, or parts. I travel the country extensively when buying parts or motorcycles for my own collection. This ensures that my valuations are current.
My Vintage & Classic motorcycle valuations are not generic. They are thoroughly researched and are bespoke to your collection.
They will include:
- A full assessment of the condition of each motorcycle, together with any engine or frame numbers (if visible)
- Value. This is my assessment of the potential transaction price and not necessarily an asking price. Of course, a sale to a dealer may be less and a sale at auction can vary on the day.
- Any notes that are specific to each motorcycle model including any evidence of history.
- Current market price comparisons.
- Sales and marketing advice.
Will you do an
online valuation?
If the motorcycle is roadworthy and if sufficient photographic information can be supplied I can do an online valuation. I prefer to attend collection valuations as the motorcycles are often in cramped conditions and difficult for owners to supply good quality photographs that will allow me to make an accurate assessment for valuation purposes.
Will you value just a single motorbike?
If the motorcycle is roadworthy and sufficient photographic information can be supplied.
What will the valuation look like?
It will be very detailed and will be in PDF format.
It will include:
- A full assessment of the condition of each motorcycle, together with any engine or frame numbers (if visible)
- A list of my assessment of the potential transaction price. This is not necessarily an asking price.
- Any notes that are specific to each motorcycle model including any evidence of history.
- Current market price comparisons.
- Sales and marketing advice.
How quickly can I get the valuation?
