King of the Road Lucas Carbide gas generator for vintage veteran motorcycles.
This is an original gas generator. It is usually coupled with a carbide headlight, which has a flame from burnt acetylene gas. The gas is created when water, from the compartment at the top of the generator, drops onto carbide in the base of the generator.
I have taken this one apart and have shown what it looks like in the carbide container.
This King of the Road Lucas carbide gas generator is Model #62. Over the years, they made several different models which varied in design and size. Some of them were much smaller. The small ones were often used in conjunction with the small rear carbide lamps.
6-3/4″ tall, excluding the fittings at the top. Approximately 3″ diameter.
Many people now buy these for their antique, veteran or vintage motorcycles as final “decorations”. They are rarely used as originally intended. In reality, the light projected from the lamps is very poor when compared to modern standards. However, they finish off the look of a bike and are excellent accessories.
Condition of the Lucas Carbide gas generator
This Lucas carbide gas generator has clearly been used. It still has the white deposits in the lower section, where the carbide was stored.
It has lost most of the original paint and it has some dings in it. Please see the images.
However, it does come with the wing nuts to fix the cylinder to a clamp on the motorcycle. It’s a little grubby.
As you can see from the image where I have taken it apart, it seems to be complete. It retains the spring and the other elements for containing the carbide.
