Pre Unit Rigid Frame Triumph Mk2 Sprung Hub with original DUNLOP WM2-19 rim

Pre Unit Rigid Frame Triumph Mk2 Sprung Hub with original DUNLOP WM2-19 rim

£480.00

Pre Unit Rigid Frame Triumph Mk2 Sprung Hub with original DUNLOP WM2-19 and original Amaranth Red centreline paint.

This is being sold as a rear hub that will need a complete rebuild as I don’t know anything about its prior use.

It’s for pre unit Triumph rigid frame bikes such as the 6T Thunderbird, Speed Twin, T100, 5T. The Amaranth Red paint on the rim suggests that it was probably used on a Speed Twin.

As you probably already know, the hub alone is heavy. So, if you would like it posted and you don’t want the wheel rim or  tyre, I will remove them before posting. There is no difference in the sale price. I have to pay to dispose of the tyre.

It comes with the original Dunlop WM2-19 rim. It has the brake arm and the brake actuator arm with the spring attached. The number stamped into the Dunlop rim is W643.

If you are rebuilding a 1950’s Rigid frame Triumph 6T Thunderbird, Speed Twin, T100 or 5T, then this Mk2 rear sprung hub might be just what you need. They aren’t easy to find now. It’s a Mk2 hub as it has several concentric circles on one side to the hub. The Mk1’s didn’t have these. The Triumph Mk2 Sprung Hub has a better reputation than the Mk1.

The Mk1 Sprung hub was fitted to some models up to 1950. The 3T 5T Speed Twin, T100 and 6T Thunderbird all had them. I can see no reason why this can’t still be used on models in these years. I think it was only the internals that changed, apart from the circles on the outside.

The Triumph Mk2 Sprung Hub was supplied from 1951. It’s interesting to note that the TR5 Trophy was offered with a sprung hub but the part number (W924A) for the complete wheel was different to the Mk2 hub supplied for the 3T, 5T, T100 and 6T (W923A).

The rim on this wheel is WM2-19. As the Trophy was offered with a WM3-19 rim and the paint is clearly not for a Trophy, I will stick to this being appropriate for the following models / years:

  • 1951: W923A for the 3T and W925A for 5t, T100 and 6T
  • 1952: W925A for 5t, T100 and 6T.
  • 1953: W925A for 5t, T100 and 6T and T100C
  • 1954: W925A for 5t, 6T. (Not T100 or T110)

Condition of the Triumph Mk2 Sprung Hub

It is being sold as seen. I have not made any attempt to tidy it up, other than wipe the rim to make sure it’s OK.

These old sprung hubs have an almost mythical status for taking your eye out when taking apart. So, be very careful! When they are correctly maintained, they are very nice period additions to a rigid framed Triumph.

The teeth on the drive sprocket are all there and OK. Some of the spokes will need a little tightening.

Other Triumph motorcycle parts

I have quite a few parts. They range from very early veteran parts through to unit Triumph motorcycle parts. My main interest is prewar single cylinder Triumphs and post war Rigids. Please take a look at the Triumph parts for sale to accompany this Triumph Mk2 Sprung Hub.
