Veteran Vintage lightweight motorcycle 2-speed gearbox.

This is possibly early 1920’s Calthorpe but I suspect it would suit many veteran or vintage flat tank motorcycles. It’s similar to the little Douglas 2 speed gearbox but a little larger. Douglas fitted a 2-stud 2-speed gearbox to their 2-3/4 H.P. models from around 1910. They are well-known for creating a very neat two speed transmission. Many other makers followed.

I am not certain, but I think this lightweight motorcycle 2-speed gearbox is possibly a Burman version. It doesn’t have the usual Burman shape on the cover, but Calthorpe fitted used Burman transmissions in the early 1920’s on their 2-speed models and there’s a chance that this is one of those.

I often get asked if I have a veteran vintage lightweight motorcycle 2-speed gearbox for sale. Most people want one that looks about right for their lightweight pioneer motorcycle project. Well, here’s your chance. AS you can see, it has the standard inline 2-stud frame fixing. This one comes with a clamp. If you look at the underside of the top-clamp, you will see the letters “NI” stamped into it. I investigated New Imperial gearboxes and the ones that I could find were a little different. They had an oil filler at the rear. This one doesn’t. It might still be a New Imperial 2 speed gearbox, but I don’t know for sure.

However, New Imperial gearboxes tend to have a prefix number before the oblique, with the sequential number following eg 20/3333. This would be a 1920 gearbox. This gearbox only seems to have a four-digit number stamped. The number is 3281. There is a small stamp in the top of the main case but I don’t recognise it.

Condition of the veteran vintage lightweight motorcycle 2-speed gearbox.

Well it’s not perfect. It’s 100 years old. For the most part, it’s in good condition. It does not have any welds or cracks. The threads are fine. All of the gears look OK, except one. It is missing half of one tooth. I have shown this in a few images. The pulley is a mess, but probably useful as a pattern.

There are loads of pictures. Please have a good look through them.

I am selling this as a non-functioning gearbox because of this. I am quite sure that a clever person out there will have a complete gear shaft made using this one as a pattern. If it was without the damaged tooth, it would be considerably more money.
