1936 J.A.P. JA Prestwich 250cc SV Side Valve vintage motorcycle engine.
Turns over and has the external oil pump fitted. As I turn it by hand, I can hear to piston rising and falling.
This appears to be a 1936 J.A.P Side valve engine. The engine number (shown in the images) begins with the letters BY/V.
B is for a 250 cc. 64,5 x 76 mm.
Y is not something that I have managed to work out yet. Perhaps it denotes long stroke? There are KY and LY engines (500cc and 550cc).
V is the year date, 1936
JAP supplied engines to many motorcycle manufacturers. So, if you need a 250cc SV J.A.P engine for your vintage motorcycle project, this is a good place to start.
Overall, it’s in very good condition but consider it as an engine requiring checking over at the very least and possibly a rebuild. It is missing a few nuts and machine screws. Look at the valve springs as there’s a few small parts missing. I have shown inside the timing cover too. Take note that the exhaust valve arm is missing.
The engine case halves have matching numbers, indicating that the engine cases are original matched pair.
