1930s DKW SB500 ORIGINAL rear fender hinged section.
This is that part. The one that people take off when they start a restoration and then lose.
In this case, this rear mudguard section was missing when the owner went to restore his 1930’s DKW SB500. So, he bought a reproduction item. He sold the motorcycle and then this original DKW part emerged from his other project boxes.
DKW SB500 motorcycles ran from 1934 to 1939. They are highly regarded as 1930’s sporting motorcycles as they had a free-revving two-stroke motor. Not many of these models exist in the UK. As they originate in Europe, I imagine that this part will help someone with their project on that continent.
So, if you have a project waiting for this DKW SB500 original rear fender hinged section, then this is your chance. It belongs to a friend, but I have it here. International shipping is not a problem.
Condition of the DKW SB500 ORIGINAL rear fender hinged section
The owner restores his own vintage motorcycles to a high standard. At first glance, this rear section is so good on the top, that you would be forgiven for thinking that it is a reproduction part. It’s not a repro. It is original.
He cleaned it off and repainted it in primer. When you look closely on the underside, there is evidence of very minor pitting on the lower edge and the supports. Also, the lower (central) number plate fixing hole is very slightly oval.
I have shown some close-up images. There are a couple of small pin-holes on the outside (left side as you look from the rear), about 10cm from the lowest edge. Both the flange that fits to the front section, and the outer part of the rear section have very minor pitting. All of this is very minor. I am just making sure that you understand that this part is not new.
In conclusion, The hinges are good and the mudguard / fender is in very good condition for a motorcycle part that is now over 85 years old. With a very small amount of work, you will have a near-perfect DKW SB500 original rear fender / mudguard section.
Do I have any other parts for a DKW SB500?
Sorry, no other parts. However, I happen to know of a fairly complete motorcycle that might be available. It is in the UK. Let me know if you are interested.
