1920’s Watford Motorcycle speedometer Model 20 – 60 MPH.
Speedometers were not a requirement in the 1920’s. The choice wasn’t limited to Jaeger and Smiths. There were many other instrument makers looking to sell their speedometers as accessories. One of these makers, was Watford. Unsurprisingly, they were from Watford in North London.
I believe they started in 1905. by 1909, they were producing speedometers similar to this one. I have stated that I believe this is a 1920’s speedo because the face also includes an address in 14 Soho Square, London.
I have seen a catalogue that offers two types of Watford Speedometers. One has a flush fitting (presumably for car dashboards) and the other looks like this one, but would have a clamp at the rear for motorcycle mounts. Both the car type and the motorcycle type came with a choice of with or without a trip record.
This appears to be the Watford Model 20 motorcycle speedometer without the trip record. They were supplied with nickel plate over brass and had bevelled glass.
Condition. Untested, other than turning the spindle by hand. This makes the needle move. However, it will need a rebuild if you actually want to use it. (I can hear a small ball-bearing rolling around).
As you can see, it has light corrosion on the case and it has lost most of the nickel plating. It retains the original bevelled glass and the face is decent.
I have no idea on the calibration. There are numbers on the case. “130” and “708 8802”.
So, if you are looking for an unusual period accessory for your 1910 – 1930 vintage motorcycle, then this Watford 60 Mph speedometer will have the right look.
