1923 AJS 350cc2¾hp Model B1 bottom end complete with crank, connecting rod, timing gears and followers.
I believe this bottom-end is for a 1923 AJS 2¾hp vintage motorcycle. I imagine it’s for the Model B5 but that tiny element is nit showing at the end of the word “Model” that is stamped into the side of the main case.
The engine number is 35215. It’s clear and unmolested. It is also in sequence with other 1923 / 24 AJS 350cc side valve 2¾hp examples.
A J Stevens Ltd, of Wolverhampton England, introduced its first complete motorcycle in 1911. The first AJS had a single-cylinder side valve engine displacing 292cc. It came in two versions. One with direct belt drive (Model A), the other (Model B) having a two-speed countershaft gearbox, an advantage enjoyed by few contemporary rivals. The AJS 2¾hp (350cc) side valve engine remained a fixture of the AJS range.
So, if you have an AJS ‘flat-tanker’, then it’s likely that you will have one of these engines. It would make an ideal spare, or build it up and have it ready. Either way, I’m not asking a fortune for it.
It’s in decent condition. I have cleaned it a bit just to check it over well. I can’t see any major damage. I have not split the cases, so I can’t vouch for the condition on the inside However, it turns freely and feels good.
The cases have matching numbers for each half.
