1923 Sturmey Archer LS 3-speed heavyweight motorcycle gearbox.
Believed for heavyweight Panther motorcycles with a 3-stud mount. Someone has mentioned that they have an identical one fitted to their Model 90 500cc Panther motorcycle.
Anyone need one for a project?
This one is a little different to “normal” boxes. The Lightweight LS had 2-stud mounts. The usual Heavyweight LS boxes had 4-stud.
This one has 3 stud mounts and I am reliably informed by a Panther owner that he has an identical gearbox fitted to his bike.
The number has “H” as a suffix, so I guess it’s a Heavyweight.
Good for a 1920’s Flat Tank project
Reading up about the LS gearboxes and then comparing in a 1929 catalogue, it seems that you could order a race-spec one. Surprisingly, the race one (HW) were supplied with / without kickstarts. However, the late-1920’s race spec boxes had the gearbox cases like the Dolls Head ones (with the top and bottom pivot mounts). Perhaps the earlier ones didn’t have those cases?
Perhaps an expert can enlighten me?
Condition:
It turns and clicks through the gears. The kick start operates and the casings are good. The keyway looks worse in the pics than it is. A key will sit in there fine.
