1927 1928 BSA flat tank Possibly for Models S27 S28 L27 L28.

I have to say that my detailed knowledge of BSA flat tank models is very limited. However, by studying the profile of this tank, together with the distance between the two filler caps, it seems that this fuel / petrol / gas tank is likely to be for the last of the flat tank BSA’s. They started to bring the saddle tank models in during 1928.

I compared the profile and distance between the fuel / oil caps, with the 1927 models. The 1927 ones had the petrol filler much further back on the tank.

So, I believe this particular flat tank is for BSA S and L models from 1927 / 1928. If I am incorrect, please let me know.

I have provided some relevant dimensions in one of the images. Hopefully, that will help you to decide if this is correct for your needs.

Here are some of the dimensions of the BSA flat tank:

  • Height overall (excluding cap mounts): 4-1/2″
  • Total length: 20-1/2″
  • Distance between the front and rear mount holes: 9-5/8″ (243mm)
  • Distance between the rear mount holes: 3-1/4″ (83mm)
  • Distance between the front mount holes: 6″ (153mm)

Is it original?

Well, I am not sure! Initially, I was convinced that it is a newly built tank. Now that I have had time to check it over, there are signs that it might be an original tank.

It’s very heavy. It weights about 5kg. So, the steel is thick. The paint is thick too. On the underside, where the paint is thinner, there is a rough surface which is like old steel that has suffered a bit from corrosion.

Condition of the BSA flat tank

It’s good. Aside from the slightly rough surface underneath, all of the threads are good. The inside is very clean and free of corrosion.

The paint is too thick and has some cracks. They are not a disaster and the tank can be used as it is. However, if I was keeping it, I would re-paint it. The gold and red lines are not very convincing anyway.

Would it hold oil and petrol? Yes. I believe it will. There are no signs of any obvious issues.
